Pair of Early USCG CPO Collar Devices

Smaller than the typical cap device, early collar-sized insignia started out in the spring of 1944, when chief petty officers were first permitted to wear overseas caps. This newly authorized headgear would need "a miniature cap device approximately three-fourths the size of the present cap device with the same design has been approved for CPO garrison caps, to be worn on the left side of the cap, two inches from the front edge." In 1959, chief petty officers were first authorized to wear collar devices. These insignia measure approximately 1" tall.
